Door to Door Salesman Arrested for Burglary
Goleta - February 8th, 2012
A 21-year old man from Arkansas is in the Santa Barbara County Jail for burglary after reportedly casing out homes while selling magazine subscriptions door to door.
Goleta Police issued a news release on Tuesday morning, February 7, 2012, alerting residents that at least one home was burglarized in the area of Scripps Crescent Street in recent days. The release included a description of the suspect.
Later that day, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls from Goleta residents who reported seeing a similar looking person soliciting in their neighborhood. In one case, a citizen on the 6000 block of Berkeley Road reported finding a prowler in their backyard who jumped over the back fence and ran away.
Several Goleta Police officers and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s deputies responded to search the area at which time they located Mathew Brian Hensley (DOB 3/26/90) of Arkansas walking on North Fairview Avenue near Shirrell Way.
Further investigation by detectives confirmed that Hensley had burglarized at least one home and had possibly broken into several more. Detectives booked Hensley into the Santa Barbara County Jail at approximately 7:41pm on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, on $200,000 bail for felony residential burglary (459 PC).
Although from Arkansas, Hensley had been staying at a motel in Santa Maria with several other young men who had been going door to door attempting to sell magazine subscriptions at various locations in Santa Barbara County.
Goleta Police and the Sheriff’s Office remind all residents to be alert when suspicious salespeople come to your door. Always ask for a Santa Barbara County issued business license and matching identification. If you believe they are committing a crime, please call your local law enforcement agency immediately.
