Sheriff's Detectives Arrest 2 Suspects for Isla Vista Stabbing
Isla Vista - February 28th, 2012
Two men from the Venice area are in the Santa Barbara County Jail on $1,000,000 bail for attempted murder following a large fight in Isla Vista that led to at least two stabbings.
At approximately 12:21am on Saturday, February 18, 2012, Sheriff’s deputies with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol responded to the report of a large fight on the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive. According to witnesses, there were at least two groups of males (estimated 6-20 people total) that had gotten into a fight on the street and that the altercation continued as the combatants moved westward on Del Playa.
Following the initial investigation, it was determined that a 21-year old male, who may have tried to stop the fight, was beaten unconscious. He was taken to the hospital with head injuries. Another 24-year old male, who witnesses say also tried to stop the fight, was slashed on the hand with a knife. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment of his wound.
Within minutes of the first two injuries, a second stabbing incident was reported in the area of Camino Del Sur and Sabado Tarde. In this case, a 20-year old male suffered a serious stab wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and released a few days later.
The ensuing investigation by the Sheriff’s Office led Sheriff’s detectives to Venice, California Monday morning, February 27, 2012, where, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division, they arrested 19-year old Jon-Kane McCullough (DOB 9/30/92) and 21-year old Sean Robert Flynn (DOB 12/29/90) for attempted murder.
It is believed that McCullough, Flynn and a group of friends drove to Isla Vista Friday, Feb 17, 2012 to party. While there, they got into an altercation with several people that led to the melee and subsequent stabbings. McCullough and Flynn are believed to be responsible for the stabbing near Camino Del Sur. McCullough was also booked for assault with a deadly weapon for slashing the 24-year old victim.
The investigation is continuing. Sheriff’s detectives encourage anyone who may have information to contact them at (805) 681-4150 or the Sheriff’s Anonymous Tip Line at (805) 681-4171.
