Los Angeles Man Arrested for Stealing Scrap Metal
Lompoc - March 8th, 2012
The Sheriff’s Rural Crime Deputy has arrested a Los Angeles man suspected of stealing thousands of dollars worth of scrap metal in north Santa Barbara County.
On Tuesday morning, February 28, 2012, a drilling company on the 2800 block of Mahoney Road reported that sometime overnight, someone had stolen ten spools of wire and industrial grade drilling equipment for a combined worth of nearly $24,000.
During his investigation, the Rural Crimes Deputy interviewed several witnesses who said that in the days prior to the burglary that a man in a white flatbed pickup truck had approached various businesses and residences looking for scrap metal.
At approximately 2:00pm on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, the deputy was patrolling the area near Bonita School Road and Main Street when he spotted a man and a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses. The flatbed was full of scrap metal.
After conducting a traffic stop, and further investigation, the deputy determined that the driver, Juan Masariegos Gonzalez (DOB 7/5/90) was the person responsible for the theft at the drilling company. The investigation also revealed that the suspect had already sold all the metal for an estimated $500.
The deputy booked Gonzalez into the Lompoc City Jail on $20,000 bail for grand theft (487(a) PC), grand theft/copper (487(j) PC), and driving without a valid California driver’s license.
