Fourth Boating Victim Listed as Missing Person
Santa Barbara, Channel Islands - March 13th, 2012
The search has been called off for a Camarillo man whose boat was found capsized near Santa Cruz Island Sunday.
37-year old Jose Juan Becerra Perez (DOB 4/6/74) and three friends went on a fishing trip in the Santa Barbara Channel Saturday, but never returned. A search on Sunday, March 11, 2012, led to the recovery of the bodies of the three passengers Sophorn Bun Sieng* (DOB 11/4/74) of Oxnard, Edgar Allen Isnec (DOB 10/9/57) of Port Hueneme, and Ramiro Alvarez Duarte (DOB 4/3/59) of Oxnard.
On Monday, March 12, 2012, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Dive Team conducted a search of the area where Becerra Perez’s body was believed to be last seen. The operation began at 10am and concluded at sundown. Although the visibility was very good and a large area was searched, Becerra Perez’s body was never found. He is now listed as a missing person.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office will conduct the investigation into the cause and manner of death. The final report is not expected for several weeks, but preliminary evidence suggests the men died from hypothermia and/or drowning.
The case will remain open as the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard conduct their joint investigation.
