Sheriff's Office Warns Residents of Potential Scam
Santa Barbara - March 19th, 2012
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents in the Carpinteria area to be aware of a potential scam.
Several members of a community based group have received an email recently from a person pretending to be a member of the organization.
The sender of the email explains that they have been travelling in the United Kingdom where they were the victim of a robbery.
They go on to say that the robbers stole all of their cash and credit cards, but left them with their passport.
The sender then requests that the receiver of the email send cash to help pay the hotel bill so the sender can leave the country and return home.
Although several people have received the fraudulent request, at this time, it does not appear that there are any actual victims of the scam.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office recommends that anyone who receives one of these emails to report it to their local law enforcement agency.
