Sheriff's Office Reports Death of an Arrestee
Santa Barbara - March 29th, 2013
On Saturday, March 23rd the Santa Barbara Police Department arrested Lawrence James Baumann, 51, of Santa Barbara for 242 PC, Battery, and 148(a)(1) PC, Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer at Alameda Park. During the arrest, Baumann actively resisted which required several officers to assist in taking him into custody. Baumann was transported directly to the Santa Barbara County Jail for booking. As Baumann was being received at the jail, he suffered a medical emergency and stopped breathing. Emergency personnel on scene provided immediate care. He was transported to Cottage Hospital by ambulance where he passed away on Wednesday, March 27th after being taken off of life support systems.
Cottage Hospital notified the Coroner’s Office of Baumann’s death. The cause of death is currently under investigation by the Coroner’s Office and the results will not be known until the investigation has been completed and pending toxicology results. The Coroner’s Office has confirmed that next of kin has been notified.
The Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an investigation into the circumstances involving the death. Due to the fact that this is an on-going investigation, no further details will be released at this time.
