Goleta Man with Knife Threatens Deputies
Goleta - April 10th, 2013
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Goleta man armed with a knife who made threatening comments about hurting law enforcement officers. 62-year-old Harley Brian Kelly was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer and will be booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail once he is medically released from the hospital.
At around 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, Kelly called 9-1-1 from a cell phone on Calle Real near Patterson and made threatening comments. A motor unit nearby responded and made contact with Kelly who then brandished a knife and made statements about wanting to hurt law enforcement officers. The suspect was being held at gunpoint when he refused to cooperate and walked away. Several deputies responded to assist as Kelly walked up the northbound freeway Patterson on-ramp. He then crossed over both northbound and southbound lanes of the Highway 101 freeway and ended up on the southbound Patterson off-ramp. Throughout the contact, Kelly had a knife and was threatening deputies and refusing to cooperate and surrender. Deputies deployed Tasers, fired bean bag rounds and utilized a baton in order to subdue and arrest the subject. He was eventually taken into custody and transported to the hospital for his injuries.
No Deputies were injured in the incident. The 101 freeway at Patterson was shut down in both directions for about thirty minutes.
