Deputies Arrest Gunman in Lompoc Area
Vandenberg Village- April 16th, 2017
At approximately 3:00 a.m this morning, April 16, 2017, deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible domestic disturbance in the 200 block of Aldebaran in the Vandenberg Village area near Lompoc. The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Cristian Arebalo, was reportedly becoming physical with family members inside the residence.
When the deputies arrived, Arebalo confronted them outside the house as he fired one round from a handgun in their presence. The deputies were able to take cover as the suspect retreated back into the residence and they requested emergency assistance. Law enforcement from across the county responded to assist including the Lompoc Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and Sheriff’s Deputies from neighboring stations. The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team (S.E.T.) and Hostage Negotiation Team (H.N.T.) were also notified and dispatched to the scene. Arebalo then called 911 and began speaking with dispatchers indicating that he was planning to escalate the confrontation with law enforcement. During this time, SET personnel and patrol deputies worked to secure the perimeter and the safety of the surrounding residences. A member of the Hostage Negotiation Team was able to establish communication with Arebalo and he was eventually convinced to peacefully surrender to SET deputies at approximately 4:43 a.m. A handgun was recovered at the scene, and it was determined that Arebalo had fired several shots inside the residence prior to our arrival that went unreported to 911 dispatchers.
Arebalo was booked into custody at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail on a charge of 664/187PC – Attempted Murder. A booking photo is not available at this time.
