Sheriff's Office Investigates Homicide in Santa Maria SUSPECT IN CUSTODY
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the murder of 28-year-old Elyse Marie Erwin of Santa Maria. Erwin was shot and killed in the early hours of Easter morning, April 16, 2017, when she went to visit a friend in the 100 block of Goodwin Road in Santa Maria. Just before 7:00 a.m., a resident in the area discovered her on the ground next to her vehicle and called 911. Sheriff’s deputies responded and determined Erwin had been shot in the head and was the victim of a homicide.
The Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and locate the person responsible for Erwin’s murder. In the immediate hours following the discovery of the homicide, Sheriff’s Detectives determined the father of Erwin’s six-year-old child was a person of interest in the case. Sheriff’s Detectives later located 26-year-old Jorge Tovar Fernandez (who goes by the last name Tovar) at his residence in the City of Lompoc. Tovar was detained for questioning. On Wednesday, April 19, Tovar arrived at the Santa Maria Courthouse to attend a child custody hearing that was scheduled following Erwin’s death. He was subsequently arrested by Sheriff’s Detectives.
Tovar was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of murder and is being held without bail. He was arraigned today in Santa Maria Superior Court.
Child Welfare Services initially had custody of the child but she is now being cared for by family members.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the homicide victim who was discovered yesterday, April 16, 2017, in the 100 block of Goodwin Road in Santa Maria. The decedent is 28-year-old Elyse Marie Erwin of Santa Maria. The next of kin has been notified.
The Sheriff’s Forensics Unit has finished processing the crime scene off Goodwin Road. The street and parking lot are again open to the public. Due to the active investigation, still in its early stages, no additional details regarding the crime will be released at this time. Sheriff’s Office Investigates Homicide in Santa Maria
Santa Maria — Just before 7:00 am. this morning, April 16, 2017, Sheriff's deputies responded to the 100 block of Goodwin Road in Santa Maria to a report of a woman down. When Sheriff's deputies arrived, they determined the adult female was deceased and that the death appeared to be the result of a homicide.
The Sheriff's Forensics Unit is processing the crime scene. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are actively working the case. No additional information will be released at this time.
