Sobriety Checkpoint City of Goleta


Goleta - June 6th, 2013

The Goleta Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday June 7th, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.  Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail time, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.  Officers will also be checking drivers for proper licensing.

The Sheriff’s Office conducts routine checkpoints as part of an effort to reduce tragedies related to driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.   Research shows checkpoints have a deterrent effect on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired.  They also bring about more awareness and encourage the use of sober designated drivers. 

Sobriety checkpoint locations are chosen based on the effectiveness they will have at drunk and drugged driving deterrence.  The safety of the public and officers is also considered when choosing a location.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The City of Goleta contracts with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office for police services.
