Search for Missing Diver Off Channel Islands
Channel Islands - June 26th, 2012
A 64-year old Santa Barbara man is missing after failing to surface while scuba diving for sea urchins off the Channel Islands.
At approximately 10:30am on Monday morning, June 25, 2012, Andres Martinez and two other adult males travelled on Martinez’s boat to an area about 300 yards off Santa Cruz Island where all three men conducted their dive to a depth of about 25 feet.
Ninety minutes later, after the other two men had completed their dive, they began searching for Martinez, who had not resurfaced. Divers with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office joined the search during which time they discovered Martinez’ weight belt and some other items at the bottom of the dive location.
A U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat and a helicopter with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office also searched the area Monday, but did not find Martinez.
Divers with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office were scheduled to search the area today, but a small craft advisory for the Santa Barbara Channel has put that on hold until Wednesday.
