Summer / Labor Day AVOID The 12 DUI Campaign - UPDATE4


Santa Barbara County- September 1st, 2013

The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests thus far, from local routine traffic enforcement and special ‘AVOID the 12’  DUI deployments in Santa Barbara County.

 
From 12:01 AM Friday August 16, 2013 through 6:00 AM Sunday September 1, 2013 officers representing 12 county law enforcement agencies hav
e arrested 145 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. (**NOTE: These numbers are only provisional with some agencies yet to report**)

 On Friday 08-30-13 and Saturday 08-31-13, ‘AVOID the 12’ conducted two sobriety checkpoints in the 400 block of Chapala Street in the City of Santa Barbara. Officers from the Guadalupe, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and UCSB Police Departments joined forces with deputies from the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and officers from the California Highway Patrol to staff the checkpoints. 

Results of the two Santa Barbara sobriety checkpoints:

·     Marco K. Desantis (05-03-72) of Altadena, CA

·     Leslye Jones (08-06-72) of Santa Barbara, CA

·     Jorene L. Lopez (02-25-72) of Santa Barbara, CA

·     Shabnam Mohazzab (09-16-79) of Encino, CA (Also arrested for possession of a controlled substance)

·     James Alan Nilsson (07-23-86) of Virginia Beach, Virginia

·     Konstantin Sergeevich Pospelov (07-20-86) of Santa Barbara, CA

·     Anthony Sanchez (12-06-88) of Santa Barbara, CA

·     Michael Justin Schiada (08-1685) of Lompoc, CA

·     Gabriela Y. Tafoya Vega (11-06-90) of Carpinteria, CA

A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effect it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired and bring about more awareness, encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers. 

Extra DUI Saturation Patrols will be deployed in several cities in Santa Barbara County throughout the remainder of this Labor Day weekend.

DUI arrest data collection will continue through Labor Day midnight Monday, September 2, 2013.  Avoid programs, named for the number of police agencies in each county, Multiple/DUI Driver’s License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols are set region wide during 18 day Summer/Labor Day Campaign.
