Santa Maria Jail Hours Expanded

Santa Maria - October 19th, 2011

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office has expanded the hours of operation for the Santa Maria Jail from three nights a week to seven nights a week.

The Santa Maria Jail was scheduled to be closed completely in July at the beginning of the 2011-2012 fiscal year due to budget cuts. However, funds that the SBSO saved and carried over from the year before, combined with funding restored by the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors, allowed the Jail facility to remain open three nights a week (Thurs-Sat 8pm-2am) for booking arrestees only.

Beginning Monday, October 17, 2011, the Sheriff’s Office expanded the booking hours to seven nights a week, largely due to the Deputy Sheriff’s Association concession to give up a 3% percent raise that was scheduled to take effect this year.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to work to expand the Santa Maria Jail hours to 24/7 to help alleviate the growing number of state prison inmates who are now the responsibility of Santa Barbara County as a result of AB 109 (Public Safety Realignment Act). The Sheriff’s Office will issue a news release when the jail hours expand to 24/7 sometime in early 2012.
