Sheriff's Deputies Arrest Suspect Who Injured a Sergeant and Fled

Santa Barbara - October 21st, 2013

A Santa Barbara man is in custody after injuring a Sheriff’s Sergeant and fleeing the scene.  21-year-old Ricky Cooper Ramirez is charged with resisting arrest with force and obstructing or delaying a peace officer.  He is also charged with possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia.  Ramirez had several warrants out for his arrest including grand theft, domestic violence and battery of a court officer.

At approximately 11:50 a.m. today, October 28, a Sheriff’s Sergeant conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 4200 block of Calle Real for a minor traffic violation.  Ramirez, who was driving the car which was also occupied by a male passenger, pulled over in the Blue Skies Mobile Home Park.  The Sergeant made contact with Ramirez outside of the vehicle and was calling for back-up when a struggle ensued.  The Sergeant was injured and transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Ramirez took off on foot northbound through the mobile home park and into the adjacent St. Vincent’s condominium community.  Sheriff’s Deputies set up a perimeter and began searching for Ramirez.  Residents assisted deputies by pointing out his direction of travel.  He was spotted by a deputy running into a nearby neighborhood and was apprehended and held at gunpoint in the front yard of a residence located in the 4400 block of San Martin Way.  Ramirez was taken into custody when other deputies arrived.

Sheriff’s deputies searched his vehicle and discovered heroin and drug paraphernalia inside.  He was also found to have several warrants out for his arrest. Ramirez is in the Santa Barbara County Jail and is not eligible for bail.
