Two Isla Vista Residents Arrested for Forcible Cell Phone Theft Attack
Isla Vista - November 6th, 2013
At approximately 5:30 p.m. last night, November 5, Santa Barbara County
Sheriff’s Deputies with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol responded to the 6600 block
of Abrego Road to a report of a strong armed robbery. A witness had called 911
to report seeing a male victim being attacked by two male suspects. The Santa
Barbara County Emergency Communications Center then received a call from the
victim himself who confirmed the information and said the suspects had assaulted
him and stolen his new iPhone. He also said during the process, one of the
suspects had dropped his own cell phone. The victim, who received minor
injuries, was able to give Sheriff’s Deputies a description of the suspects.
Sheriff’s Deputies set up a
perimeter and called in a Sheriff’s K9 Unit to assist in the search for the
suspects. About ten minutes later, a deputy located one of the suspects, 21
year old Starrr Martin of Virginia, nearby in the area of Camino Pescadero and
Abrego Road. He was taken into custody without incident.
Soon after, Sheriff’s Deputies
located the second suspect, 18 year old Aaron Cuthbert of Palmdale, California
in the 6600 block of Picasso Road. While being taken into custody, Cuthbert
fought with deputies and fled. A thirty minute foot chase ensued and the
suspect was ultimately apprehended in the 700 block of Camino Del
The two suspects are roommates
and acted together to assault the victim and steal his iPhone which was
discovered in their Isla Vista apartment. The suspects both attend Santa
Barbara City College. Martin is charged with robbery and conspiracy.
Cuthbert is charged with robbery, conspiracy, resisting arrest and giving false
information to a peace officer. Bail is set at $100,000 dollars each.
