Man Arrested After Overnight Standoff

Goleta - November 9th, 2011

A Santa Barbara area man is in jail this morning after a domestic violence incident led to an overnight standoff with Sheriff’s personnel.

At approximately 9:20pm on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, Santa Barbara County Emergency Dispatchers received a 911 domestic violence call that a man was hitting a woman near the intersection of Magna Vista Street and Baxter Street. The caller also reported hearing several gunshots outside a nearby residence shortly before the physical attack.

When Sheriffs deputies arrived, they made contact with an adult female who was the victim of the assault. Although showing signs of minor injuries, the woman declined medical attention. Shortly thereafter, Sheriff’s deputies were able to track down the suspct, 24-year old Jonathan Ulises Aceves (DOB 9/26/87), to his nearby residence on the 4700 block of Chandler Street.

Deputies also learned that Aceves, who is on probation, may have access to several firearms. When several attempts to get Aceves to surrender failed, the Sheriff’s Office summoned the Special Enforcement Team (i.e. SWAT), which arrived at approximately 1:25am, Wednesday morning.

Prior to SET’s arrival, several surrounding residences were evacuated to ensure the safety of the occupants. The Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at San Marcos High School for the nearly two dozen evacuees. At approximately 3:15am, SET was able to take Aceves into custody without incident. Sheriff’s detectives have since served a search warrant and have seized at least one weapon.

Aceves was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on multiple felony counts including, domestic battery (243(e)(1) PC), making death threats (422 PC), threatening a witness (136.1(c)(1) PC), discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner (246.3(a) PC), felon in possession of a firearm (12021(a)(1) PC), felon in possession of ammunition (12316(b)(1) PC), committing a crime while on probation (12022.1(b) PC). Bail is set at $100,000.
