AVOID THE 12 ARRESTS SEVEN DUI SUSPECTS AT FRIDAY
FIESTA CHECKPOINT IN SANTA BARBARA

Officers with the multi-jurisdictional Avoid the 12 anti-DUI
campaign made seven DUI arrests from 37 investigations at a Friday
night checkpoint in Santa Barbara during Fiesta celebrations. Police
towed 15 cars on 30-day impounds and made one warrant arrest.
Sgt. Ed Lardner of the Lompoc police, who commanded the event, moved
the checkpoint to a different location halfway through the evening.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Dept., Lompoc, Guadalupe and UCSB police
along with California State Parks and Allen Hancock College District
officers staffed the event.
At a nearby checkpoint, California Highway Patrol officers screened
432 cars, conducted a dozen DUI investigations and towed five vehicles.
The California Office of Traffic Safety funds Avoid the 12 through the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 40 other
similar campaigns in the state with a total of 450 participating
police agencies.
