Sheriff's Detectives Arrest 1972 Escapee from Michigan

Goleta - March 3rd, 2008

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Detectives were contacted earlier this week by an anonymous caller who claimed to know the whereabouts of a subject who had escaped from a Michigan Prison in 1972. The caller stated that the subject was living in the Goleta area and had been for several years under the assumed name of Jason Vonstraussenburg. The caller added that Vonstraussenburg was employed at UCSB and his true name was Roger Crona (DOB: 12/09/46).

Through further investigation Sheriff’s Detectives learned that Roger Crona escaped from the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility on 06/20/1972, and was listed on the Michigan Department of Corrections website as one of the most wanted escapees. Additional investigation and forensic technology provided a positive match between Jason Vonstraussenburg and Roger Crona.

On 02/29/08, Sheriff’s Detectives arrested Jason Vonstraaussenburg aka: Roger Crona at UCSB without incident, on the outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Michigan Department of Corrections for Prison Escape. He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail and is currently awaiting extradition to Michigan.
