Sheriff's Dispatcher Receives Life Saving Award

On Monday January 14, 2008, at approximately 11:00 pm, the Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call. The caller told the dispatcher “my wife isn’t breathing and turning blue”. The Emergency Medical Dispatcher who answered that call was Shannon Hoogenbosch.

Dispatcher Hoogenbosch immediately initiated Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols and determined the caller’s wife was not conscious or breathing. Emergency Medical Services were promptly dispatched as Dispatcher Hoogenbosch began pre-arrival instructions. Learning that the 65 year-old woman was in the bathroom and in cardiac arrest, Dispatcher Hoogenbosch using EMD instructions directed the caller to begin immediate CPR, until Deputies with the Sheriff’s Department or EMS / Fire personnel arrived to took over.

Sheriff’s Deputies, Fire, and Paramedics soon thereafter arrived on scene and quickly initiated advanced life support. The patient began to breath and regained a pulse. She was then transported to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital and subsequently transferred to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment and admission. After further treatment the 65 year-old woman regained consciousness and has made a full recovery.

Today, March 3, 2008, Emergency Medical Dispatcher Shannon Hoogenbosch received the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department’s Emergency Medical Dispatch Save Award, on behalf of the Santa Barbara County EMS Agency and the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department Congratulates EMD Shannon Hoogenbosch for her outstanding efforts in using her training in Emergency Medical Dispatch to save the life of a human being.
