Sheriff Brown Graduates 12 Sheriff's Custody Deputies

Goleta - March 20th, 2008

On Thursday, March 20, 2008, Sheriff Bill Brown will graduate the second class of Custody Deputies for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.  Twelve Sheriff’s Custody Deputies will graduate in a ceremony to be held at the Goleta Valley Church, 595 North Fairview Ave., Goleta, at 1:00pm.

Previously, Custody personnel were required to complete a 240-hour course of training within their first year on the job.  In an effort to provide the best possible training to our Custody staff, and afford the highest level of professional service, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department increased the minimum requirements of newly hired Correction Officers.

To be a Custody Deputy, personnel must complete a 408-hour course of training within their first year of employment.  This intensive training provided by the Sheriff’s Training Bureau provides the officers with the skills they need to manage the inmate population in the jail subdue violent inmates and transport inmates.

Per C.S.A. (Correction Standards & Authority) guidelines, an “Entry-level” custody officer must complete a 240-hour Academy training. This includes written, physical agility, and practicum testing throughout the Academy. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department has increased that training. This training requirement includes but is not limited to the following training: Pepperball, Taser, Advanced Defensive Tactics, Fake Identification, Weapon Qualification & Transition Drills, Department Policy, Gangs, Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, Case Law, Processing and Housing Inmates, Booking Process, Report Writing, Court Testimony, Fire and Life Safety, Radio Protocols, Baton Training, and CPR/First Aide.

The Sheriff’s Department congratulates Custody Deputies; Tory Scott Aguilar, Eric Alexander, Gabriel Alvarez, Selim Celmeta, Ruben A. Deleon, Kathy  C. B. Gardner, Bryan Taylor Green, John Patrick Lane, Samuel Mlyniec, Guillermo Ramirez, Christopher D. Weddle and Nicolas C. Wigle.
