Found Body Identified by Sheriff Coroners' as Missing Swimmer

Summerland - March 24th, 2008

On March 13, 2008, Edwin Platt was notified by the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol that his boat had broken free of its anchorage near East Beach, as a result of a strong current. Mr. Platt located his boat just off the coast of Summerland between Finney Beach and Loon Point. In an attempt to stop his boat from beaching itself, Mr. Platt entered the water and began to swim towards the boat. For unknown reasons Edwin Platt disappeared in the water approximately 25 yards from the beach. A search for Mr. Platt ensued which included the Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Team, Search and Rescue, Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit, Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol and Summerland / Carpinteria Fire Department. The search for Edwin Platt ended several days after his disappearance.

On March 24, 2008, two women who were walking their dogs on the beach near loon point discovered human remains. The women immediately called the 9-1-1 to report their discovery. Sheriff’s Patrol Deputies from the Carpinteria Station in addition to the Sheriff’s Coroners Bureau responded. The human remains were recovered and taken to the Coroners Bureau in Santa Barbara. On today’s date, March 25, 2008, the Coroners Bureau through further investigation identified the found human remains to be that of 50 year old Edwin Platt of Santa Barbara.
