Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team Responds to Injured Person at Red Rock Recreational Area

Woman Breaks Ankle Jumping Into Red Rock Pools

Santa Barbara - April 18th, 2010

Public safety personnel were called to help a 21-year old UCSB student who suffered a broken ankle Sunday afternoon after she jumped into Red Rock pools in the Santa Barbara County wilderness.

On Sunday, April 18, 2010, four female UCSB students walked several miles up the Santa Ynez River past the closed gate at the first crossing on Paradise Road until they reached the Red Rock recreational site.  While jumping off one of the cliffs above the Red Rock pools, one of the girls, a 21-year old from Pleasanton, California, jumped and hit her foot on a rock just under the surface and broke her ankle.  Unable to use their cell phones due to poor reception, they started to carry their injured friend out on a Boogie Board that they had brought with them.  Once in range of a cell site, they dialed 911 for assistance.

Nine personnel from the Sheriff’s Volunteer Search and Rescue Team along with personnel from SB County Fire and American Medical Response responded.  Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel found the injured woman at the end of the access road to the Red Rock pools and initiated first aid treatment until paramedics from County Fire and AMR arrived.  The injured female was then transferred to an AMR ambulance and transported to Cottage Hospital for further treatment.
