Sheriff's Deputies Capture Suspected Serial Burglars
Nearly a Dozen Businesses Hit in One Night
Santa Barbara, Carpinteria - April 24th, 2010
Two men are in custody for a burglary spree in south Santa Barbara County that ended when an alert Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the pair at a gas station in Carpinteria.
At approximately 12:45am on Saturday, April 24, 2010 an alarm alerted Sheriff’s deputies to a break in at a business on the 4200 block of State Street. When they responded they found the front door lock had been damaged and some merchandise in the store apparently missing.
Over the next two hours, Sheriff’s deputies received more than a dozen similar reports at two businesses on the 100 Block of S. Patterson, three businesses on the 5700 Block of Calle Real, and a business on the 100 Block of N. Fairview.
At approximately 3:24am an alert Sheriff’s deputy, who was aware of the rash of burglaries, spotted two men acting suspiciously at a gas station at the Casitas Pass exit in Carpinteria. After interviewing both men the deputy discovered a large amount of merchandise and cash in the duo’s vehicle.
By the next morning, at least four more businesses reported similar break-ins overnight. In all, eleven businesses in the Sheriff’s jurisdiction reported being the victim of burglary overnight.
Michael Ray Marval (DOB 2/1/62) and Lonnie Wayne Roth (DOB 4/15/67) were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail. Marval is being held on a no bail parole hold. Roth was booked for Burglary (459PC-Felony), Receiving Stolen Property (496PC-Felony), and Criminal Conspiracy (182PC-Felony) on $250,000 bail.
