A DUI checkpoint at Los Carneros and Calle Koral Saturday night, May 15, 2010 has led to the arrest of three suspected drunk drivers who tried to evade deputies.
At approximately 10:45pm, 18-year old Samuel Sobell (DOB 5/28/91) of Santa Ynez knocked over several orange cones while making a u-turn to avoid the checkpoint. He was caught a short distance away. Sobell was driving on a temporary license after losing his CDL when he was arrested for driving drunk three weeks ago in Buellton.
Shortly after midnight, 20-year old Tomas Antonio Varela Ravon (DOB 12/22/89) attempted to evade deputies by turning off Los Carneros and onto the sidewalk via the wheel chair access ramp. However, his car was immobilized in the direction of City Hall when he high centered the vehicle in the dirt.
And, just before 1:00am (5/16), 23-year old Mariarosa Perez (DOB 4/29/87) was traveling on a flat tire when she drove through the red flashing lights before the checkpoint, through the checkpoint at 30mph, failed to stop for the five deputies on the line, drove through the red flashing lights at Los Carneros and Calle Koral before finally stopped for pursuing units on Los Carneros.
The final numbers for the operation are:
Vehicles screened: 1,018
DUI's: 3
Zero Tolerance: 1 (under 21 with alcohol between 0% 0.499%)
Towed Vehicles: 13 ( no license, due to suspension or arrest)
30 day vehicle holds: 6 (for those never issued a license or those with a suspended license)
Regular hold: 7 (releasable to someone with valid license)
Misc. citations: 8
