Search and Rescue Team Aids Injured Hiker

Santa Barbara- May 30th, 2010

At approximately 9am on Sunday, May 30, 2010, emergency crews responded to a report of an injured hiker on the trail up from Tunnel Road to Inspiration Point.  Personnel from Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City Fire and Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue located the injured hiker approximately 1 1/2 miles up the Mission Canyon, just below Inspiration Point.

The injured hiker, a female in her 30's from Santa Barbara, said she was hiking down from Inspiration Point when she slipped on some loose dirt and came down hard on her ankle.  Family and friends initially tried to carry her down but were unable to adequately help her down the rough trail, so they decided to call 911.

Medical and SAR personnel splinted her ankle and using a stretcher with a wheel worked to safely transport her down to a waiting AMR Ambulance to be transported for further medical care.

Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, an all volunteer unit of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department, reminds all hikers to make sure they are physically fit and have proper sturdy footwear when venturing out on the backcountry trails.  Given the fires of last year, a lot of loose dirt has washed down off the mountains, causing slippery footing at many places along the trails.
