Sheriff's Detectives Arrest Teenager for Subway Crime

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Detectives have arrested a 17-year old boy for an attempted robbery Sunday night at a Subway sandwich shop in Goleta; it’s the same Subway that a gunman robbed just three weeks ago.

At approximately 8:45pm on Sunday, July 11, 2010 Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an attempted robbery at the Subway located in the Magnolia Shopping Center in the 5100 hundred block of Hollister Avenue. According to two employees, an unknown suspect entered the sandwich shop, pointed a gun at them and demanded money. The employees fled to the back of the store to avoid the suspect who ended up fleeing the store without getting any money.

Later that night, at approximately 10:20pm, a Santa Barbara Police Officer observed a reckless driver in the 900 block of East Haley Street in Santa Barbara. A short six block pursuit ended when the reckless driver crashed the vehicle into a retaining wall in the 1200 block of Diana Lane. The driver fled into the neighborhood, but SB Police caught him a sort time later after sealing off and conducting a search of the area. It turns out that the car had been reported as stolen out of Isla Vista. Police found a handgun during a search of the vehicle.

Aware of the earlier incident in Goleta, the SBPD contacted the SBSO which began an investigation into the 17-year old suspected car thief. Through their investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives have been able to link the teenager to Sunday’s attempted robbery. The juvenile, who was already booked into Juvenile Hall for the stolen car incident, was booked on Monday for Attempted Robbery (664/211 PC) and Commercial Burglary (459 PC).

Detectives continue to investigate the first robbery which occurred in the evening hours of Wednesday, July 23, 2010. No one was injured in either incident.
