Coroner's Bureau Identifies Victim Struck by Train

Goleta - July 27th, 2009

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau has identified the man hit and killed by a train Sunday as 38-year old Murtaza Kassim Ali of Goleta.

Mr. Ali had stopped his vehicle off Highway 101 south of Refugio Beach shortly after 6pm on Sunday, July 26, 2009. A witness says Mr. Ali had gotten out of his car to check on a future campsite and did not see an approaching Amtrak train. The passenger train blew its warning horn before applying its brakes, but was unable to stop in time.

Mr. Ali was struck and knocked several yards from the point of impact. He died before emergency medical personnel arrived.

The Coroner’s Bureau will conduct toxicology tests as is standard procedure. Results usually take several weeks.
