October 18 , 2007 - Goleta
Two local teenagers were killed in a late night head on collision on Calle Real at Mendocino Rd. in the City of Goleta. The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Wednesday night, October 17th. Nearby residents called 911 after hearing a collision. When Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Deputies arrived, they discovered the head on collision between an SUV and a BMW. Both vehicles sustained major damage and the SUV had caught fire.
Santa Barbara County Fire and AMR Paramedics also responded to the scene to tend to the victims of the crash. In all, four victims were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The driver and sole occupant of the BMW and the left rear passenger of the SUV were transported to Cottage Hospital and were pronounced dead after life saving efforts were unsuccessful. Two other victims from the SUV were transported to Cottage Hospital, their conditions are serious but not life threatening.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Major Accident Response Team is conducting the accident investigation. The initial investigation has revealed that the BMW was traveling west on Calle Real. A witness reported seeing the BMW pass a white vehicle (described as a pickup or minivan) just prior to colliding with the SUV traveling in the east bound lane. The speed of the vehicles and if alcohol was a factor are still under investigation. Sheriff’s accident investigators would like to speak to the driver of the white vehicle the BMW reportedly passed prior to the collision. Information from that vehicles occupant’s could prove valuable in this investigation.
The victim in the SUV has been identified as 19 year old Juan Alvarez of Santa Barbara. The driver and victim in the BMW has been identified as 18 year old David Ramirez of Goleta.
