The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Lompoc Police Department with an investigation into an officer involved shooting. On October 9, 2021, at 6:33 p.m., Lompoc Police officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon. As the incident unfolded, the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to respond to officers. The suspect eventually came to the door with a handgun and pointed the weapon at the officers, resulting in an officer involved shooting. The three officers who were involved are not injured and the suspect was fatally wounded.
At the request of Lompoc Police Chief Joseph Mariani, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to conduct an investigation into the officer involved shooting. The Lompoc Police Department will be handling the criminal investigation associated with the original call for service as well as the administrative investigation into the officer involved shooting. The identity of the involved officers as well as the identity of the suspect are not yet available for release.
