Goleta, Calif. – A DUI driver and the passenger in the vehicle have both been arrested following a crash into a residence. On Monday, June 9, 2025, at approximately 11:38 p.m., deputies responded to the 6200-block of Cathedral Oaks Road for a report of a vehicle into a residence. When they arrived, deputies learned that the driver, 23-year-old Nehemiah Verhoef of Goleta, failed to negotiate a left-hand turn from Cathedral Oaks to southbound Carlo, driving over a crosswalk activator and into a residence. Verhoef was found to be under the influence of alcohol. The passenger of the vehicle, 24-year-old Luke Gibou, from Santa Barbara attempted to hide opened containers of alcohol from deputies prior to their arrival.
Deputies arrested Verhoef for driving under the influence of alcohol (misdemeanor). Gibou was arrested for concealing evidence (misdemeanor). Both suspects were booked at the Main Jail and have since been cite released. The occupant of the residence was in separate area of the home when the collision occurred and there were no reported injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind drivers that DUI’s are 100% preventable. Sergent Noel Rivas with the Goleta Traffic Bureau said, “With rideshare, designated drivers, and public transportation, there’s no excuse for putting lives at risk by driving impaired. Make the right choice before you get behind the wheel—and avoid a trip to jail.”
The City of Goleta contracts with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services.
